Heritage

Cochrane’s Fall Fair is among the oldest in Northern Ontario.

In 1913 – just three years after Cochrane was officially established – the Cochrane Agricultural Society formed and held the town’s first fair.

In 1917, the Fall Fair had 1,000 people visit the grounds and $116.50 was collected at the gate. At that time, the largest attraction was the Tug-a-war which was “probably the best [one] that was ever witnessed in North country,” as reported by the Cochrane Northland Post.

In the early years, prizes for exhibits included a sow with litter and one pair of silk stockings.

The Fall Fair – and much more!

More than 100 years later, the Cochrane Agricultural Society is thrilled to still be hosting the Cochrane Fall Fair as an immersive way to connect people to our agricultural heritage.

And the Ag Society doesn’t stop there. Throughout the year, we invite our members, neighbours, and friends to plant in the community garden.  We also offer free hands-on programming to schools and groups.

Grow your own food

After many years of dreaming and planning, the Cochrane Agricultural Society relaunched its community garden at the Fairgrounds in 2016.

Members plant, water and weed regularly to grow carrots, potatoes, beans, peas, chives, onions, lettuce, and more.

Anyone who wants their own plot can contact us.
